Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) serve the purpose to advocate, validate and create visible safe school spaces for LGBTQ youth. However, these groups often have difficulty establishing themselves as stable, visible fixtures in the school environment. This program aims to support GSA advisors as they work to improve the school climate for LGBTQ youth.
A QuERI Research Fellow will be available to work with advisors to establish GSA programming that empowers young people to be active participants in their school environment and engage in creating change in their school environment. Advisors will assisted in developing year-long program plans that include youth leadership development, developing youth-directed goals for creating change in the school community, and activity design around youth-directed goals. Content and activity programming for GSAs can also be provided.
In Spring 2012, a GSA Leadership Workshop was provided to support GSA leaders in participating in DASA implementation in their schools.
